Cycle "Iceland. What Remains" includes outdoor watercolors, paintings, and drawings by Barbara Puto inspired by her journey through Iceland. Ice, black beaches, geothermal land, the extraordinary light of the North, wild animals, and unforgettable places became the beginning of a pictorial narrative.
Some works were created directly in Iceland. Others emerged only after returning — from memory, emotions, and images that refused to fade.
The journey has ended. Iceland remains. And it continues to lead me to new works.
Iceland in my painting
I went to see the ice.
I returned with something much bigger.
I painted outdoors, but many of the paintings came later. Iceland remained in colors, light, and memory — and that's where it continues to return to my painting.
Painted under the influence of extraordinary light in Hindisvík, in northwestern Iceland, when despite it being midnight the sun still remained above the horizon. Expressive oranges and cool blues capture the moment when the usual rhythm of day and night ceases to apply.

Inspired by the landscape around Diamond Beach, the watercolor tells the story of what remains out of sight. The visible ice forms are just a fragment of a larger structure hidden beneath the surface.

Ice on the black sand of Diamond Beach became the starting point for the collision of cold with light, fragility with strength, and permanence with transience. The landscape loses its literalness, leaving energy, color, and tension.

The island lupins were meant to be the subject of this watercolor, but stirred by the constant wind, they began to set their own rhythm in the painting. Instead of a botanical landscape, a painterly record of movement, color, and air emerged.

The blue of the old, dense ice became the beginning of thinking about the force of pressure and the change it induces. The observation of nature here transitions into a metaphor for human experience — the pressure that can cause cracks, but also reveal hidden depths.

Islandia w moim rysunku
Islandia pozostała ze mną także w rysunku. W czerni papieru i oszczędnej białej linii powracają spotkania z jej dziką naturą, zwierzętami i miejscami, które stały się częścią mojego obrazu Północy.
To kameralne prace, w których rezygnuję z koloru, pozostawiając światło, kontrast i gest. Każdy rysunek zatrzymuje jedno spotkanie, jeden obraz, jedną chwilę — coś, co zobaczyłam w Islandii i zabrałam ze sobą.
Chwila ciszy i wycofania. Maskonur zatrzymany w intymnym geście, jakby na moment zamknął się we własnym świecie.
