Contemporary Painting

Contemporary painting as a space for mapping processes, networked interdependencies, and the relationship between humans and the biosphere..

In my creative practice, I treat canvas and paper as sensitive screens that register phenomena invisible to the naked eye: traces of experiences, interspecies tensions, and processes shaping human identity. By breaking traditional divisions between figuration and abstraction, I seek a visual language for contemporary crises and relationships – both those occurring within the individual and in the complex web of connections with the natural world.

The painting cycles I create constitute closed research projects developed around specific ideas. They are united by a rigorous approach to technological traditions, the museum-like permanence of materials, and the question of how traditional painting mediums can respond to the challenges of the posthuman era.

About me

THE ARTIST

Barbara Puto – a contemporary Polish painter based in Warsaw. At the center of her artistic practice is the human being — their inner world, relationships, and invisible processes through which the experiences and presence of others shape personality and perception of reality.

In her works, she combines figuration with organic and abstract forms, searching for a visual language for phenomena that are difficult to represent directly. Nature becomes not only a subject for her but also a source of metaphors that allow her to speak about humanity. In the series "Microcosm," invisible structures of the microorganism world lead to reflections on interdependence, communication, and collective intelligence. In "Humanity," trees taking on human-like features become carriers of stories about relationships, closeness, strength, and fragility.

The artist works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, and also creates minimalist drawings on black paper. She selects the medium and method of representation according to the character of the developing project. An essential part of her practice remains a conscious workshop and attention to the durability of her works and the quality of materials used.

Barbara Puto's work develops within the framework of her own cycles, which — despite formal diversity — share an attempt to give visible form to what remains invisible: emotions, bonds, dependencies, memory, and traces of experiences.

Barbara Puto's work is gaining increasing institutional recognition on the international stage. In December 2025, the artist was awarded the prestigious Certificate of Artistic Achievement, awarded by La Pinacothèque Museum in Luxembourgas part of the international competition Luxembourg Art Prize. Her paintings have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the country and currently enrich private collections in Poland, Europe, and the USA.

NEW PAINTING

In my latest works, I explore the theme of human personality and the forces that shape it.

I am interested in the traces left by others, the social and cultural limitations, the relationships that build us, but also those that begin to confine us.

A person does not emerge in isolation. They carry within them fragments of encounters, experiences, and the presence of others. I seek a painterly language for this process — for the tension between what we receive from the world and what we ultimately recognize as our own.

MICROCOSMOS

A painting cycle inspired by the invisible structures of the natural world, particularly microorganisms and slime molds, and their ability to create complex networks.

Organic forms serve as a starting point for reflection on relationships, interdependence, communication, and collective intelligence. "Microcosmos" directs attention to a world where the boundary between the individual and the community becomes less clear, and the existence of a single organism can be seen as part of a larger web of connections.

HUMANITY

A cycle in which tree forms take on characteristics of human figures, blurring the visual boundary between man and nature.

Gesture, tension, and organic structure become the language of a narrative about human experience—closeness, loneliness, strength, fragility, and the need for survival. "Humanity" uses the natural world as a metaphor for relationships and emotions, seeking similarities between the way humans exist and the structures of the organic world.

BEINGS

A cycle dedicated to the inner states of humanity and experiences that are difficult to clearly present or name.

Fear, pain, helplessness, memory, hope, or inner victory are not illustrated literally here. The figure ceases to be a portrait of a specific person and becomes a vessel of emotions and a record of internal experience. "Beings" attempt to give visible form to what unfolds beneath the surface of what we can see.
