About the cycle "Liberated Young Ladies" by Barbara Puto
This cycle is my response to the way women's bodies have been portrayed in art for centuries — as objects, visions, ornaments, inspirations, but rarely as subjects. Over a hundred years have passed since Picasso, and women are still often seen as figures, not as voices. "Les Demoiselles Liberated" turns this arrangement upside down. My heroines are no longer silent characters on the painting stage. They are not "young ladies" or allegories. They are present. They know what they are looking at and why.
I create intimate, humorous, and often ironic situations: women at the table, women discussing art, women observing works, women, themselves. These are mini-stages of everyday life, but each one is a little manifesto. The heroines do not take on the role of "muses." They create their own language. Their gaze is not an object — it is a subject.
In terms of form, the cycle combines the expression of watercolor, intentional deformation of form, and conscious stylization that refers to cubism while being contemporary at the same time. Irony, softness, and critical distance merge into images that want to ask the question: "Who is really looking here — the artist or the heroine?"
Social and artistic context
"Liberated Young Ladies" fits into the broader contemporary debate about the female gaze in art. For centuries, the male gaze has dominated — women were portrayed from the outside, not from within. In my reinterpretation, they not only "reclaim the body" but also reclaim the narrative.
