About the cycle "Unobvious Identities" by Barbara Puto

"Unobvious Identities" is a watercolor cycle dedicated to what remains difficult to grasp, unsaid, and internal in human presence. The starting point is not a portrait understood as an image of a specific person, but an attempt to captureidentity states — temporary tensions between consciousness and intuition, the visible and the hidden, certainty and sensitivity.

In these images, identity is neither a form nor a declaration. It is a process — dynamic, often contradictory, built from subtle shifts of light, gaze, and gesture. Faces appear as spaces of experience, not as representations. Light serves as a sign of attentiveness and self-awareness, while shadow becomes a place of concentration for what is invisible yet essential.

The cycle operates on the tension between transparency and concealment. Realistic elements intermingle with distortion and abbreviation, not to distort the figure, but to extract its internal dynamics. The images do not offer unequivocal answers or ready-made emotions — they remain open to interpretation, inviting the viewer to engage with their own experience of unobviousness.

"Unobvious Identities" were conceived as a cycle with a defined horizon of meanings. The set of works creates a closed narrative, in which successive images do not expand the theme but gradually deepen it, leading through a series of states constituting human presence. It is a story of identity understood not as a permanent structure, but as a sensitive balance between the internal and the revealed.

Unobvious Identities

The cycle "Unobvious Identities" is about those parts of ourselves that are hard to name — about intuition, internal contradictions, about the lights and shadows that coexist within one person. It is a story about the faces we show to the world and those we carry solely within.
